The 草莓社区 community mourns the death of Albert John Rotermund, Jr., PhD, professor emeritus in the Department of Biology, who passed away on February 27, at the age of 83.
Rotermund was a dedicated researcher and educator at Loyola for over 35 years, teaching courses such as biochemistry, cell biology, anatomy and physiology, and general biology.
Those close to him knew him as a beacon of knowledge possessing a quiet intellect, kind soul, and deeply humility. He always carved out time for his students, guiding them towards their goals with patience and wisdom ensuring everyone had an opportunity to learn. His influence extended beyond the classroom shaping the futures of countless scientists, nurses, and doctors with his mentorship and heartfelt recommendation letters.
His published works and research contributions, including ATP and hibernation on reptiles and mammals, synthetic blood, and additives that may cause cancer, stand as a lasting reminder of his intellect, dedication, and pursuit to benefit humanity.
In a letter to the biology department following his retirement from the University in 2006, Rotermund noted, 鈥淏eing part of Loyola, and a faculty member of the biology department, has certainly been one of the highpoints of my life. This holds true for my family as well, with all three of our children proudly graduating from Loyola.鈥
Albert 鈥樷橝l鈥欌 is survived by his spouse of 54 years, Carol Rotermund (ne茅 Willson), his children Mary (Chris) Kulton, Thomas Rotermund, and Elisa Rotermund (Arnold Butiu), his grandchildren Madeline Kulton, Abby Kulton, Lauren/Steve Rotermund, TJ Rotermund, Jaden Butiu, Andrew Butiu, and Ronin Butiu. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and his brother Paul Rotermund (Judy). He was preceded in death by his parents Albert John Rotermund, Senior and Wilma Ann Rotermund (ne茅 Siege).
Services will take place in Arlington Heights on Sunday, March 3, and Monday, March 4 and more information can be found .
