Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry features strong programs in both undergraduate and graduate education. We offer BS degrees accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Chemistry and in Biochemistry as well as BA degrees and minors in chemistry. Many undergraduate chemistry majors participate in the student affiliate of the American Chemical Society. Numerous opportunities for undergraduate research also exist and students are encouraged to participate in faculty directed research projects. We also offer programs leading to MS and PhD degrees with specialization in Analytical, Biological, Chemistry Education, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical chemistry.

Battery researcher and Loyola's Assistant Professor Dr. Progna Banerjee's scientific research featured in the US DOE office聽

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized the power of adaptation that that makes the DOE workforce stronger during an hour-long celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). A mural of artwork submitted by DOE employees, each capturing their personal takes on the theme 鈥淎rt of the Possible" was unveiled on Oct 24, 2024. The works included paintings, photographs, tapestries, ceramics, and other media. Visitors to the Forrestal building can view the mural outside the auditorium. Loyola's newly hired Assistant Professor in the Inorganic Chemistry specialty, Dr. Progna Banerjee's electron microscopy data was part of this mural in DOE building in Washington, D.C.

Fran Seabright Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research

The intricate task of accommodating diverse learning styles presents a considerable challenge for educators, especially within the expansive lecture classes of organic chemistry. In response to this challenge, a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project was initiated by Anna Buttell and Dr. Polina Pine. Their commendable efforts garnered recognition at the Iota Sigma Pi Symposium on February 24th, 2024, where their work was honored with the prestigious Fran Seabright Award for excellence in undergraduate research as a 2nd best poster. The accolade was specifically bestowed upon Anna for their insightful poster presentation delving into the topic of "Learning challenging chemistry concepts through cartoon representation."

2023 Undergraduate Research Showcase

After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we resumed celebrating undergraduate research this year at the annual Undergraduate Poster Show. A total of 29 of the students who were enrolled in CHEM 300 during the academic year presented their work to a diverse audience of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, families, and friends.
